Gingerbread is not too different from Froyo - the look and feel remains the same. The perfomance is brilliant compared to all the previous versions of Android. The update right now available via XDA developers. This is not the final baked product. It lacks some basic components like Wi-Fi and data/radio and it is just not worth the effort for an average user to flash.
The Nexus One we used had working Wi-Fi, GPRS/EDGE and the only thing it lacked was GPS. Android enthusiast Ajit Pillay did a commendable as it is and then he managed to flash market on the Nexus One.
Though the update is finally here, it is higly recommended that users wait for a more stable 2.3 ROM. The ROM is also available for HTC Hero but there is a good chance that you might brick your device.
