Nokia To Use Dual Core 1.2Ghz Processor For Windows Phone 8 Handsets

Speaking to Forbes, executive director of the Union of European semiconductor maker STMicroelectronics Carlo Bozotti revealed that at least some of Nokia phone next Microsoft Windows (WP) smartphones will be equipped with silicon from the ST-Ericsson - a joint venture between STMicroelectronics (STM) and Ericsson.
He also announced that Nova Thor U8500 is the first chip to power the power of these phones. It seems plausible, because the STM was chip supplier to Nokia, before it has formed a 50-50 partnership with Ericsson. Bozotti also confirmed that the ST-Ericsson will be one of the two chip vendors Nokia Windows SmartPhone. Qualcomm may probably be the second largest supplier after all WP7 units issued to date is driven by its Snapdragon processor.

Since U8500 is a dual-core SOC (System on Chip) is compatible with Full HD (1080p) video recording capability, is believed to have the ability to playback 1080p as well. In addition to support WXGA touch screen, the processor allows simultaneous viewing of two discrete XGA screens. Interestingly, New Thor supports multiple operating systems. We'd love to see this functionality to take advantage of a dual-boot option WP and Symbian OS. The U8500 is based on the ARM Cortex A9 double arm handling Mali 400 GPU 3D graphics subsystem. It also incorporates the usual bells and whistles, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, HDMI output, USB 2.0, GPS, and full web browsing experience for next-generation smartphones.

Nokia could have been criticized for selling low-power phones in recent times, but now seems to have finally paid attention to competition from other smartphones, as well-specced. Furthermore, as the Symbian operating system has lost ground to rivals and iOS,Android, Nokia will probably make the best of the way to the final.
